What are pheromone dispensers?

Jul 28, 2021

Anyone who lives or has vacationed in a fruit-growing region has certainly seen these brown plastic things hanging in the trees or on fences. These so-called dispensers also hang in our orchards, serving a very specific purpose: to confuse. But now it's not you who should be confused, but the codling moth...

The codling moth is a butterfly and is considered a pest in fruit growing. It lays eggs on the apple. Some time later, the larvae hatch and feed on the apple. The famous worm in the apple.

That's annoying, especially when you really want to enjoy biting into a fresh apple.

cause confusion

Insects use sex pheromones to locate mates of their species. These brown dispensers release this species-specific pheromone. The male codling moth is confused and unable to find its reproductive partner. The moth itself is therefore not harmed; it simply cannot reproduce in the orchard where this confusion method is used.

Actually, the dispensers should no longer be

These brown dispensers are then replaced every year because the pheromones they contain are eventually used up. Incidentally, this confusion method is also used in organic farming.

I think it's a shame when the old dispensers in orchards are no longer collected, but new ones are simply hung up. Not only does this look unsightly, but it's also unnecessary plastic hanging around in nature.
