The art of distilling is cultural heritage – and we are right in the middle of it!

Apr 10, 2025

When I read the news that the art of distilling had been officially added to the list of intangible cultural heritage, I immediately got goosebumps. This recognition by the German UNESCO Commission means that our traditional craft is now receiving the cultural recognition it deserves. For me, as a fourth-generation distiller, this is an incredible honor and validation of our work.

What does “intangible cultural heritage” mean?

Intangible cultural heritage encompasses living traditions, knowledge, and skills passed down from generation to generation. These include customs, performing arts, oral traditions, and even artisanal techniques. The art of distilling was included in this list because of its deep-rooted tradition and the unique combination of knowledge, experience, and passion.

Artisanal distilling vs. industrial production

In contrast to industrial mass production, artisanal distilling prioritizes quality over quantity. Each batch is produced with care and dedication, often in small batches to preserve the character and uniqueness of the product. This approach allows for regional specificities and the preservation of traditional production methods.

What does this mean for us at BRENNLUST?

For us, this recognition is a validation of our philosophy. For generations, we have relied on authentic and traditional production methods, producing in small batches, and placing great importance on authentic craftsmanship. Our own small fruit farm allows us to precisely control the quality of our raw materials and thus produce distillates of the highest quality.

This award motivates us to continue practicing our craft with passion and keeping the tradition of distilling alive. At the same time, we see it as our duty to pass on this knowledge and provide interested parties with insight into the fascinating world of distilling.

Thank you to our community

Without you, our loyal customers and supporters, this success would not be possible. You share our passion for high-quality spirits and help ensure the continued existence of artisanal distilling. As a thank you, we would like to invite you to visit our show distillery and learn more about our craft. Let's celebrate and enjoy this cultural heritage together.
