Shaken
This drink comes from the talented David Gran of myBar by David Gran . It was a relatively spontaneous idea and has turned out to be one of my favorite David drinks. I highly recommend trying it!
Basil as a cocktail ingredient
We usually know a Basil Smash as a Gin Basil Smash, created by Hamburg bartender Jörg Meyer. That was over 10 years ago – and no wonder – the cocktail has clearly become a classic.
Basil isn't just for gin, of course. That's why numerous Basil Smash variations have emerged since then. It's important to clarify that this cocktail recipe isn't simply a copy of the Gin Basil Smash, where gin has just been replaced with orange liqueur. It's more of a variation. The original Gin Basil Smash is mixed differently and with a different ratio of ingredients. Therefore, they are two distinct drinks.
Homemade sugar syrup in 3 minutes
Most of us won't have sugar syrup or cane sugar syrup on hand. However, the syrup is incredibly easy to make. All you need is sugar or cane sugar and a small 2cl or 4cl glass (or any other suitable container). I use a 4cl shot glass with two markings at 2cl and 4cl.
Now I fill the glass with sugar up to the 2 cl mark. Then I pour boiling water over the sugar up to the 4 cl mark. Stir constantly; the sugar will dissolve in 2 to 3 minutes. Let the syrup cool, and the sugar syrup is ready in a near 1:1 ratio. The ratio is even more precise if you weigh it, i.e., 20 g sugar + 20 g water. Powdered sugar can also be used, which has the advantage of dissolving more quickly.
Shake-Shake-Shake,
Shake-Shake-Shake,
Shake your basil!
You'll need a shaker for this cocktail. If you don't have one handy, either use a wide-necked bottle (so large ice cubes fit) or a very large jam jar. A bar shaker is generally better, as it won't break and is very easy to clean. I use a Boston shaker.
When shaking, it's important to shake really vigorously . In this cocktail, this also helps to break down the basil leaves into smaller pieces, releasing their wonderful aroma. At the same time, the lemon and lime juice get an extra burst of freshness when they're "shaken" with oxygen.
The best way to find out is to try it yourself by shaking a drink and then stirring the same drink.
If he is too strong, you are too weak.
This is a cocktail with a hefty alcohol content. If this cocktail is too strong for you, or if you miss the extra refreshing kick that comes with sparkling tonic in a Gin & Tonic, you can also top it up with some soda water. Personally, I prefer it without soda.

Cocktail - shaken
Orange Basil Smash
- 5cl orange liqueur
- 2cl fresh lime juice
- 1.5 cl sugar syrup
- 8 basil leaves
- ice cubes
Shake all ingredients vigorously with ice in a bar shaker. Use plenty of large ice cubes, definitely not crushed ice! The more ice cubes, and the larger the ice cubes, the less diluted the drink will be.
Now everything is strained into a tumbler filled with fresh ice. The finer the strainer, the fewer basil pieces will be in the glass. While the green leaves are visually appealing, they tend to get stuck between your teeth when drinking.
